Introduction In every school’s district, it is stated the school will offer a safe environment for all students. But every day on the news, there are stories in which a teenager commits suicide, or a teenager bullies another student. In recent years, it seems these types of news stories have been on the rise and brought to many people’s attention. For example, there has been shootings, hazing, physical abuse, and murders happening everyday in schools (Furlong et al., 2005). When a student enters a school building it should be a safe environment where he or she feels protected. However, that is not always true. All over the world, many students fear entering school buildings because they know it is a place where they may be bullied, teased, and physically or mentally abused. Educators must be aware of those issues and educate themselves on how to keep students safe both in and out of school. The American Federation of Teachers (2010) suggest in order for school violence t o decrease, there must be a district wide commitment to safety. Creating safe support schools are necessary to protect students’ academic and social success. In recent years, teachers have worked hard to show safety at schools and it is reassuring to know that their efforts are making a big difference.
